About Us

Why We Do What We Do

Our Story

We didn't set out to build something.

We set out to make sense of something. A pattern we'd each been watching for years, in communities we'd given ourselves to, in practitioners we respected, and if we're honest, in ourselves.

The pattern went like this: years of sincere, devoted practice. Real depth. Genuine openings into the nature of awareness, into something that felt unshakeable. And then life. A relationship rupturing, money, conflict, the ordinary weight of being human, and the whole thing would buckle. Not the insight exactly, but the person carrying it.

What struck us wasn't that people struggled. Struggle made sense. What struck us was that the teachings had almost nothing to say about it. The human dimension, emotions, relationships, the body, the slow work of actually changing, was treated as secondary at best, yet most often as a distraction. The direction was always up and out. Transcend. Witness. Let it pass.

We watched sincere people adopt the language of awakening while quietly drowning beneath it. We watched "trust and surrender" become a sophisticated way of not looking at something. We watched witnessing, a useful yet preliminary step, quietly become dissociation. And we watched the gap between a person's spiritual understanding and the way they actually lived widen rather than close, the depth of their insight somehow making the human mess feel more shameful, not less.

Neither of us could accept that this was simply the price of the path.

We met in 2017, in a community we were both devoted to, though our routes into that world had been quite different. What drew us together, slowly, was the recognition that we were asking the same questions and that neither of us was finding satisfying answers in the places we'd been looking.

Creating Our First Retreat Together

By the time we began working together formally, teaching at Hridaya Family Meditation and Yoga Retreat Centre in Chiapas, Mexico in 2021, something had already clarified between us. Between Kyle's years of somatic, tantric, and non-dual practice and Sasha's background as a licensed psychotherapist deeply versed in the same spiritual terrain, we had found a language in which psychological depth and spiritual awakening weren't in tension but were, we came to see, each the completion point of the other.

Our first offering was a single retreat. We called it All-Embracing Love. We didn't know then that it was the beginning of anything. We were just following what felt true, combining what we each knew, seeing what happened when you stopped treating psychological healing and spiritual awakening as separate tracks. The response told us we were onto something real.

The Birth of AwakEmbody

AwakEmbody grew from there. Not quickly, not by design, but through years of teaching, refining, and being honest about what was actually working. It became a body of work built around a simple but consequential premise: that awakening which cannot survive contact with real life is incomplete, that a life not infused with the wisdom of awakened awareness is shallow and unfulfilling. That the body is not an obstacle, it is both the ground and the proof of the practice. That emotional honesty doesn't compromise depth, it is depth. That the human and the divine are not two different territories requiring two different maps.

A Word on Where We Come from and What We Are Not Claiming

Both of us are practitioners and initiates within tantric lineages, and our work is informed by that depth and transmission. But AwakEmbody is not 'tantra', we do not position ourselves as teachers of authentic tantra in the traditional sense. We began our teaching lives within a system rooted in Advaita Vedanta, Patanjala yoga, and hatha yoga. Over the years our understanding has been shaped more and more by immersion in tantric practice and philosophy. We bring that influence, both practice and view, into everything we do. However we are not here to pass on a lineage.

On the same note, we have no interest in positioning ourselves above those we work with. The dynamic of idealized teacher and dependent student is one we are conscious of and deliberately work against. What we offer instead is the company of two people who have done a lot of work, on the cushion, in relationship, in the places where practice gets uncomfortable and inconvenient, and who found that the full inclusion of psychological and somatic reality into spiritual life didn't dilute anything.

It made everything more alive.

Who Are We?

Kyle Brooks

The life he was expected to live didn't touch the one thing that had really mattered to him since childhood. Painful experiences as a teenager left him disillusioned and searching, and hardened into a quiet conviction: if no one around him understood what life is really about and why we’re here, he would figure it out himself.

In his early twenties he travelled to Peru, discovered ayahuasca, and met his first spiritual teacher. Eight years of deep immersion in a non-dual contemplative community followed. He practiced intensively, undertook long solitary retreats, and began teaching silent meditation retreats.

Yet something wasn't adding up.

The deeper his understanding became, the wider the gap grew between what was known and how he was actually living. The pain of this contradiction wasn't philosophical. It was human, and it pointed painfully at something fundamental: he had been living slightly above his own life, subtly lifted out of the raw vulnerability of embodied experience.

Transcendentalism wasn't the answer.

Subsequent encounters with somatic meditation and tantrik transmission shifted something fundamental. Awareness stopped being something apart from experience and became inseparable from the living, breathing, relational nature of life in the world.

When Kyle and Sasha met, they began asking: what does awakening actually look like in a real human life?

That question became AwakEmbody.

In the teaching space Kyle is direct to the point of cutting, yet relatable, with a crass, sometimes slightly inappropriate sense of humour. He has a gift for bringing the abstract down to earth in a tangible and accessible way. For Kyle, spirituality stopped being about transcending the human condition a long time ago. It is about arriving in it. Fully. Without the gap.

Outside of teaching Kyle enjoys writing and playing chess. He is a passionate student of the Sanskrit language and is engaged in the scholarly study of Indian philosophy via the Yoga Studies platform.

Sasha Medvedovskaya

Sasha did not come to spirituality because her life was falling apart. She came through disillusionment with the 'perfect' life.

Growing up in Saint Petersburg in a loving and supportive family, she was intellectually gifted, disciplined, and ambitious. She stood at the edge of a promising academic career, she was engaged. Her future seemed set.

And yet something inside was restless in a way that success could not touch. The recognition came slowly: if she already had so much and still felt incomplete, the next achievement would not solve it either.

At seventeen an encounter with a Tibetan teacher made an impact that became a tidal wave of change.

Rather than suppress the deeper question of whether she was living freely or performing an identity, she did something radical. She stepped away from her PhD, ended her engagement and moved to Italy. What followed was collapse. Financial instability, cultural displacement, and serious illness converged, and everything she had built her sense of self around fell away. Meditation stopped being philosophical and became necessity.

Eventually her path led to Mexico, where her family found land in the mountains of Chiapas and began building Hridaya Family Meditation and Yoga Retreat Centre.

Through years of teaching at Hridaya she saw how easily spiritual practice could become refined avoidance. How someone could rest in spacious awareness yet remain contracted in relationship. She wanted integration, not transcendence, and this led her to formal training in psychotherapy, specialising in dance and movement therapy, and deeper immersion in tantrik yoga and Shaiva Tantra.

Meeting Kyle brought these threads together into AwakEmbody.

Sasha brings warmth, psychological precision, and a devotion to wholeness into everything she teaches. She recognises the difference between genuine surrender and dissociation. For her, emotional maturity is not separate from realisation. It is part of it.

For Sasha, awakening is not ascent. It is the courage to exist without needing to prove that existence.

Our Approach: A Threefold Path

From Essence to Embodiment to Expression—

This is the Arc of Living, Lasting Transformation.

Rooted in Non-dual Tantra and informed by modern somatic psychotherapy, we offer a path that is equally:

This teaching rests on three foundational pillars:

  • Embodied Awareness – A full-bodied intimacy with the silent, alive ground of pure being.

  • Emotional Integration – A labour of love that brings the subconscious into alignment with the wholeness of being.

  • Living Expression – Unleashing the creative potential that longs to move through you as life.

Embodied Awareness

Through practices rooted in non-dual Tantra, we guide you into direct, embodied contact with the living, creative, self-aware presence beneath all experience.

Enlightening the Unconscious

Insight alone isn’t enough. Traces of old conditioning often linger, limiting our capacity to live as love. Until the unconscious is illuminated and liberated.

Living Expression

Awakened awareness wants to live and your life is the playground in which it creates, becomes, dissolves and dances. Become a beacon of power, presence and beauty.

The Journey Starts Here,

Don't go Beyond This Life, Arrive Here, Live it Fully
